The origin of its famous names

Moonlight White: This name comes from a special tea making procedure. Generally, the upper surface of the tea leaves treated with this procedure appear to be black while the the reverse side looks white, especially the buds, they appear as white as moonlight.

Legend says this tea was originally harvested by the local beautiful young girls at night and the whole processing procedure exposes minimum to the sun sight. So, the locals named it Moonlight Beauty tea.

Tree species

Menghai large leaf tree species is native to Menghai County, Xishuangbanna and has been rated as the national improved tea variety in 1984. This variety can grow 7 m tall in the wild. Its leaves are vivid green and obviously larger than some common varieties. The buds of this variety are yellowish-green and covered with numerous microvilli (fuzz). Tea leaves of this species are high in phytochemicals. For one bud tea with two leaves, just as an example, the contents of amino acids, polyphenolic compounds, caffeine and catechuic acid account for 2.3%, 32.8%, 4.1% and 18.2% respectively. So, pu-erh tea made from this species is high-quality and has a rich aged flavor, mellow tastes with a full bodied tea essence.

Legend

There was a beautiful legend connected to this tea in Bulang culture. Long long ago, there was a beautiful young Dai (the Dai nationality) princess living in Xishuangbanna. This kind-hearted princess has a beautiful name - Seven Princess. She was later married to a handsome young Bulang man for the friendly relations between the Dai nationality and the Bulang nationality. Seven Princess is not only beautiful but also intelligent. With her help, the Bulang people quickly learned how to plough and sow and make teas. Just because of this, she has been honored as the tea goodness of Bulang people. Later, in honor of her, moonlight beauty tea has been chosen as the tribute tea since people thought that this tea is the embodiment of Seven Princess’ wisdom and beauty.

Bulang people: The Bulang people have lived in Bulang Mountians for many generations. The Bulang nationality is traditionally associated with tea planting and the ancestors of Bulang people are thought to be the earliest tea growers and makers.
