Fu Shou (Chinese: 福寿, wishing the tea drinker has long and happy life) purple clay tea pot, one of our featured Yixing teapots comes from Yixing(宜兴) City, in the heart of Jiangsu Province.

This tea pot is a perfect combination of Chinese purple clay and Chinese calligraphy.

The whole pot body is decorated with Xiao Zhuan (Chinese: 小篆, a style of Chinese calligraphy) characters incorporating best Wishes for the drinker. “福” and “寿” means happiness and longevity.

Made of Duanni clay and handmade by local seasoned potter who are adept at making purple clay pot, this Fu Shou Yixing Teapot has round and plump body which is smooth to touch and pour. In addition to these, the hyperbolic ear-shaped handle adhered to pot body and build-in strainer with nine holes structure offer more convenience and hand feeling to its user. Plus sturdily constructed bottom with a personal chop carved below, It deserves to be rated as an exquisite teapot.

This unglazed Yixing teapot proved it could capture most the real color and fragrance of tea. If it is seasoned well, tea liquid will not easily get stale even left overnight in the summer.

Yixing purple clay (also known as Zhisha), as a unique ceramic art form and essential part of Chinese tea culture, has a long history of more than 1,000 years. Yixing Zisha can also be referred to by the name of its birth place, Yixing, located in the southern Jiangsu, in south China. The earliest ceramic activity here can be traced back to five to six thousand years ago, based on the relics of Neolithic Age, found by experts. As a kind of traditional handicraft and trade good, purple clay plays a crucial role in this region, furthermore the impact brought by purple clay on tea culture and ceramics industry are impossible to estimate.

Yixing teapots won universal appeal not only for their novel design and varying colors but also for the utility and multifunction. They are made of Yixing clay, which is a special kind of mineral found in mountains of Yixing, rich in iron, quartz, mica, kaolin, hematite, isinglass, in addition to many other trace minerals. It has been used for making purple clay for many years since Song dynasty (960-1279).

The term "Yixing clay" is often used as an umbrella term to describe several distinct types of clay used to make Yixing teapots, such as:
Purple clay or Zisha or Zini (紫砂/紫泥), purple-brown color;
Zhuni (朱泥), reddish brown clay with high iron content;
Duanni (段泥), formulated by using various stones and minerals on the basis of Benshan green clay, producing various colors including beige, yellow, and green.

All the 3 kinds of clay feature for their own peculiar characteristics and can be made into tea pots having unique style of their own.
